Boulevard Park is one of several small neighborhoods situated in midtown Sacramento – all urban and uniquely alive, yet pleasant with plush trees canopying over charming, older, Victorian-esque homes.
Nestled in between New Era Park, Mansion Flats, and Marshall School, this distinctive “park” is discernable by the grassy medians on 21st and 22nd Streets, the only area in midtown with such strips. Once a race track at the turn of the 20th century, it is one of Sacramento’s most carefully preserved historic neighborhoods, with many of its homes more than a century old and restored to pristine condition.
Sacramento Magazine notes that the neighborhood is reminiscent of San Francisco, ideal for “lovers of old architecture and haters of commuting.” The fact is readily apparent by the care of which homes are kept (in no small part due to requirements from the planning agency and design and preservation board), as well as the number of pedestrians and bicycle shops. Neighbors are also known to come together for holiday gatherings, spaghetti dinners, and masquerade balls. A diligent and nurturing neighborhood association spearheads beautification projects, garage sales, National Night Out, and gifts to the senior center.
Boulevard Park is practically bubbling on weekends, as residents venture out and enjoy an early brunch or browse at the farmers market or not-so-occasional craft fair. While theatres, dance companies and galleries are bountiful in the midtown area, Boulevard Park is home to its own colorful, burgeoning businesses. New Roma Bakery sits on the E Street boundary of the neighborhood, while Old Soul at the Weatherstone Coffee & Trading Co. is a morning necessity for locals (and an all around cool, socially-conscious coffee shop).
